Facebook: The New Frontier of TV?

According to recent reports, Facebook is on track to begin releasing its own streaming content. With about two dozen shows in the works, the social media platform will feature short 5-minute video clips (the sort of content we're used to seeing when scrolling through our news feeds), as well as full-length shows.

Facebook has said that they see scripted videos as an important feature for keeping users around, though right now it's hard to imagine logging onto Facebook to watch a show. That said, the platform has changed at a rapid pace since its inception, expanding into more and more areas of its users' lives. Additionally, its rival social media platform, Snapchat, has had great success with adding video content. Snapchat started out as a mode of communication between users, made a step towards video content with snapstories, and now features wildly popular original content, even showing behind-the-scenes footage from network hits like Saturday Night Live.

Still, Facebook's plan to produce full-length original shows is unusual for a social networking platform. Will Instagram (which recently copied the "Story" feature of Snapchat) and Twitter follow suit? If social networking sites become video content producers, popular streaming sites like Hulu and Netflix will have to adjust to keep up with the competition. Television networks will certainly have to respond, as well, though they're already working to compete with online streaming services.
